shots of the trajectory that killed pistorius' girlfriend and how that may undermine his story of what happened that night. the latest from court in a live report straight ahead. also coming up, a story about apple picking, that's what it's called. criminals who snatch your iphone while you're actually using it. a self-proclaimed thief explains how he targets his unsuspecting victims. this will be useful information this morning. and then yahoo! ceo marissa mayor is here with us, her first exclusive interview after returning to work after having a baby. she'll talk about that and a big announcement to make about yahoo! as well. we'll check in with her in a few moments. let us start with what has been a dramatic morning in court at the oscar pistorius' bail hearing. nbc's michele kosinski just left the courtroom. good morning to you. >> reporter: hi, savannah. it's ended and will continue. today we heard debate over whether or not steroids were found in pistorius' home, still unclear, and statements from neighbors who claim they heard fighting, gunshots, screaming,

more gunshots as prosecutors punch what they believe are big holes in pistorius' story. oscar pistorius coffers his face in public now, arriving for a second day of his bond hearing. today, comes stunning detail, the chief police investigator says they have witness statements from a woman who says she heard what sounded like fighting coming from the home for a full hour, between 2:00 and 3:00 that morning, then heard gunshots. the defense pointed out she lived nearly 2,000 feet away. another witness who claims he heard gunshots, looked out his window to see lights on at pistorius' home and heard a woman scream two or three times, he says, followed by another few gunshots. police also say they found steroids, testosterone with needles for injection in pistorius' bedroom. the defense countered that was an herbal remedy forcing police to concede it might not have been tess ter rone. they said he would have had to

walk down a 23 foot hallway, go into the bathroom and shoot at an angle from the door to the toilet at five feet away and have his prosthetic legs on because the bullet holes were on the floor with a downward trajectory. pistorius said his legs were off. according to his version of events he said he awoke in the middle of the night to get a fan from his balcony when he heard a noise in the bathroom. i felt a sense of terror, vulnerable, i had to protect reeva and myself. i grabbed my .9 millimeter under my bed, screamed words for him or them to get out of my heof m and reeva to phone the police. prosecutors made it clear they don't buy it, why would a burglar lock himself in the toilet and why wouldn't he assume a noise in the bathroom might be his girlfriend. if he's screaming yelling for reeva to call police wouldn't she have answered from the bathroom. and when he fired the first shot, wouldn't he have heard something from her? police calling his version of

that morning, highly unlikely. pistorius continues his job, his defense hit police on a number of points saying if your partner was screaming there was an intruder in the house wouldn't you lock yourself in the bathroom and keep quiet too. what we're hearing now would not be advisible at a trial, this is only a bond hearing. we don't know if pistorius will be released. >> before i let you go, let's tie up one thing. is there still an open question as to whether the substance found inside his home was steroids or not or have police conceded they misread the label? >> yeah. absolutely that is an open question and it was interesting, police said in no uncertain terms we found steroids, testosterone with needles for injection. it was only until they were completely done with their testimony that the defense said wait a minute, what's that stuff called? testocomposutium coenzyme? that's an herbal remedy.

police said okay, i saw the first word, assumed it had something to do with testosterone, it's still being tested. what appeared to be a big deal was quickly doused and now 100% in question, savannah. >> one of the reasons we wait to see what will happen inside the courtroom when there's a trial. we want to bring in star jones, former homicide prosecutor. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> this is a case that will turn on the facts. a lot of facts inside this hearing today. do you think there has been significant damage done to oscar pistorius' story? >> well, circumstancely yes, indeed. when you put together a homicide case you're going to try to match the story or statement of the defendant with the forensic evidence. there's a tremendous amount of forensic evidence. they're going to put together a scenario of what likely happened in that house that morning. once they match it, if the story does not match up, oscar pistorius is in trouble. >> you hear about some of these. you have a detective that said the trajectory of the bullets

was downward and this is somebody, pistorius, who claims he was on his stump, he wasn't wearing his prosthetic legs. there's evidence that reeva steenkamp was dressed in the bathroom that would undermine his story that she was in bed sleeping before this. >> and also, you would think that the normal, reasonable thing to do when you first hear a noise in the middle of the night if you're awakened is first look to your right and ask your sleeping partner did you hear that also? they're going to be matching logical common sense. we're not dealing with a jury this time. we will deal with a judge. >> that was my last question. oscar pistorius is somebody who, prior to valentine's day, had an enormous amount of goodwill, beloved figure in south africa, sympathetic figure in court. apparently he has been sobbing uncontrollably. because this is never going to be a jury trial in south africa, does any of that matter? >> what ends up happening as you remove the histrionics in the courtroom in the united states, the defense attorney and prosecution can't play to the jury, can't play to emotion, it will come down to a logical

determination of what's reasonable and whether or not this was premeditated murder. >> as michele said, this was a bail hearing. unusual. in our country, a bail hearing generally speaking wouldn't be this lengthy. we wouldn't see this amount of evidence. >> no, you would not. however, if i were the prosecutor looking to keep someone in -- excuse me, to deny bail, i would present my strongest case. but it's being undermined by some of the facts. the cops are not ready yet. they don't have all the information. >> star jones, always good to get your perspective. thank you. now here's david. here at home, we're following a major story developing this morning, emergency crews searching for possible victims after a kansas city restaurant was flattened in a huge natural gas explosion and fire. nbc's john yang is at the scene this morning. good morning. >> good morning, david. they're bringing in cadaver dogs and heavy equipment to look for one person still unaccounted for. given the enormity of this explosion, it is remarkable so far there are no official fatalities.

daylight reveals the destruction caused by a massive explosion and raging inferno in an upscale shopping district. a popular restaurant levelled. the blast came at about 6:00 p.m., happy hour. the fire so big it engulfed an entire city street. the impacts of the blast felt blocks away. >> everything just exploded. it was just -- >> it shook the entire area. it set off all the car alarms through the entire block. the flames were even taller than the building next to it. >> reporter: at least 14 injured, one critically, taken to area hospitals. at a news conference officials said one person, a female restaurant employee, is still missing. >> we have been in contact with that person's family who is still missing and our sympathy goes out to them. >> the epicenter of the explosion, jj's restaurant. david franses, the owner's brother, says the loss of one

of kansas city's landmarks is devastating. >> my brother put 27 years of his life running this business, built it into one of the fine restaurants in kansas city, and come down and see a hole in the ground and flames is a pretty staggering experience. >> reporter: as the search continues, officials are racing mother nature as a winter storm bears down on the region. >> it is important that we do as much as possible today in light of the weather that's coming in which will make it extremely difficult after that. >> reporter: as the search for that woman continues, so does the search for a cause. preliminary indications are that a contractor hit an underground natural gas line. david? >> john yang, thanks very much from kansas city this morning. >> all right. mr. roker has his eye on a big storm this morning. could bring more than a foot of snow to parts of the midwest. al, good morning to you. what can you tell us? >> it's a huge storm, savannah. it has many facets to it. not just snow and ice but severe weather as well.

low pressure coming out low pressure coming out of the west. we've got a jet stream, lots of gulf moisture and frigid air. they all combined to make for a massive storm right now. in fact, we have winter weather advisories, weather storm watches, even ice warnings stretching from southern california all the way into wisconsin and illinois. we're expecting to see anywhere from about 12 to 18 inches of snow. as you get into kansas, there could be a foot and a half to two feet of snow in central kansas on up into nebraska right now. we also have a severe side to this storm, risk of severe weather, including tornadoes, from midland, wichita falls, dallas. rainfall amounts over the next five days with this system, five to seven inches of rain from louisiana all the way up into south carolina. david, savannah? >> al, thank you so much. natalie is here with a look at the rest of the day's top stories. good morning. >> good morning, david and savannah. good morning, everyone. >> police have identified a gunman in a deadly shooting spree in southern california.

officials say a 0-year-old student, ali syed, went on a rampage, killing three people, wounding several others before turning his gun on himself. police are still searching for a motive that caused sayed to go on a killing spree that spanned seven counties and included multiple carjackings. several thousand federal employees could be furloughed unless congress can come to an agreement by march 1st. what's known is a sequester that goes into effect cutting $85 billion this year. the pentagon notifies congress today of its large-scale furlough plan should those cuts kick in. let's head to wall street. cnbc's jackie deangelis is at the new york stock exchange. good morning. >> good morning, natalie. another day, another cyber attack. this time on apple. authorities believe that the hackers that targeted facebook last week used the same software to attack the mac computers of apple employees. all this, of course, coming on the heels of chrysler, jeep and

headquarters of unit 61398, the cyber warriors for china's people's liberty. army. >> it's actually not just from china. the chinese government sanctioning these attacks. >> among the targets of the hackers, america's very infrastructure. >> now our enemies are seeking the ability to sabotage our power grid, our financial institutions, our air traffic control systems. >> reporter: other targets, the news media, including "the new york times," the washington post and "wall street journal" and familiar brands like coca cola, facebook. and now apple. the hackers have names like ugly gorilla and dota, according to this instructional video from the computer security firm that did the study. >> here we see dota logging into one of its e-mail accounts. >> reporter: how does it work? the attackers penetrate a computer sending deceptive e-mails, trick ing users to clicking on a malicious link to a phony website so the hackers can steal confidential files, grabbing them back to shanghai. >> when these companies are

happened, he's gone. in atlanta, a thief follows this woman into a store and makes his move. snatching her iphone right from her hands. >> it's a trend that's actually gaining speed. >> reporter: police call it apple picking, the explosion of brazen iphone thefts. >> they often sneak up from behind you, the snatch is very quick, very fluid. >> reporter: you never even know what hit you? >> no. we get very poor descriptions of these suspects. >> reporter: making it harder to catch? >> very hard to catch. >> reporter: this thief in los angeles, attack a woman while stealing her phone. this man is a self proclaimed iphone thief, stealing his secrets to wnbc. face hidden, voice disguised. he says he's turning over a new leaf, describing in creepy detail the tactics he used.

>> look for women. the older, the better. you can't catch me. i'm going for you. >> reporter: most of us are easy targets, texting, talking, oblivious to what's going on. he has swiped cell phones from public bathrooms. >> people get out of work. the more people that are around, the more you blend into the crowd. they simply drop their guard. >> reporter: for the criminals, it pays off. iphones are hot on the black market. >> iphone 5 right now you're looking at around 300 bucks for it. >> reporter: with iphones in high demand and criminals literally fighting for them, police are offering a new warning for all of us. >> don't fight back. there's much more of a chance you're going to get injured if you fight back. let them have the phone. >> good advice. there's another layer to this. identity theft. if they steal your iphone while

a gas main break touched off explosion at a restaurant during dinnertime last night. the blast engulfed an entire city block. it was so powerful, it could be felt blocks away. more than a dozen people were injured. several were taken to local hospitals. four people are dead in a series of shootings and carjackings in southern california. nbc's miguel almaguer has the latest as police continue to search for a motive. >> reporter: the shooting spree began inside this suburban home an hour outside of los angeles. police say 20-year-old ali sayed gunned down a woman in her 20s as his parents slept upstairs tuesday morning. >> what the woman was doing inside his home is still under investigation and not known at this time. >> reporter: investigators say the suspect fled the scene, armed with a shotgun. saed then carjacked a in a truck, uttering a few chilling words where letting him go.

this guy, and you know, be where are our heros? it's almost to the point that there's nothing that could surprise us anymore as far as he's innocent or guilty, i'm not an attorney. it certainly looks like it's lining up against him. >> as mary carillo said yesterday, we were caught up in this story. she said look, i helped put the halo on his head. i think we all did. we spotlighted him. he was a biomedical story, human story. we all helped to anoint him. i think from a medical standpoint the question will be, were those steroids, was he injecting? was that steroid rage? if you've never seen someone get jittery and lose their temper and edge on steroids, it is a frightening thing. >> one of the facts we'll be watching closely to see how that develops in the courtroom. let's move on. the reality of rehab. of course we saw that mindy mccready took her own life. she had a long struggle with drugs and at one point in her life had been on this show "celebrity rehab" with dr. drew. it's been noted in the press,

in the past 18 months four of the show's 43 participants have died. this is the fifth one. >> wow! >> you raise the question -- certainly it's not the show's fault. >> no. >> the larger question is, do these kind of shows help or hurt? >> i think you have a couple things. drew pinsky is a friend of mine. i happen to think he is really great at what he does. but this underscores addiction is tough. it is not a quick fix. we watch the show because they're train wrecks, not because we expect people to die, but because we expect -- we get some perverse pleasure over watching other people struggle. i'm frankly not surprised by the numbers. >> i think this number one, crosses the line. drew's story? >> i don't know if these people are of sound mind and capable enough to make an appropriate decision, if they're mentally disabled are they able to make a decision like this. secondly if you go back and watch the movie network, which predicted this ridiculousness in tv, we surpassed it. how far can we go. >> let me read a statement from dr. drew.

steenkamp. one witness heard an hour of nonstop fighting before then hearing gun shots. another claims to have heard shots then screaming, and one more shot. the defense says that the first witness lives too far away from pistorius' home to be credible. meantime, pistorius' legal team is firing back after police say they found testosterone and needles in the runner's bedroom. the defense says police found an herbal remedy that is not a banned substance. rescuers are searching for a missing person this morning after a huge explosion and fire in kansas city. a gas main break touched off the explosion at a restaurant during dinner time last night. the blast engulfed an entire city block. it was so powerful it could be felt blocks away. more than a dozen people were injured and several were taken to local hospitals. police have identified the gunman in a deadly shooting spree in southern california. officials say a 20-year-old student, ali sayed, went on a rampage, killing three people, wounding several others before turning his gun on himself.

to happen. like we feel more like business partners and we don't feel like lovers. and, again, i think you're absolutely right. i think it's a really good thing as parents to remind ourselves it's good for our kids to model good relationships and to keep that spark alive. >> and you schedule it once a week? do you go every week? >> i wish i could. my husband's schedule is very crazy. we do try. i wee got away a little bit. >> you say no on the date night. why is that? >> for me, my life is so scheduled already that one more thing is just one more thing. it's like oh, my gosh, now i have to plan this date night. it's got to be perfect. we have to have a happy ending. for me, i just enjoy -- my kids are a little older. my youngest is 12. we can be at home alone. we enjoy just catch iing up on couple of our tv shows that are kind of just our that we watch

together or watch a football game, which i don't understand and my husband explains to me. it's wonderful and bonding. that's how we do it. it's very -- >> as long as you're still bonding. >> it's not a fancy thing. i live in wisconsin. i'm going to fish fry. it doesn't have to be super planned out. it can be like let's leave early and go home and watch tv or watch a movie. >> we need to lower the bar on what's perfect. it can be anything. >> what about a night of sleeping in, though? isn't that -- in fact, cal berkeley found that couples who slept well together tend to have better relationships, tend to communicate better overall and i think that's key. everybody is rested. >> everybody at home might be surprised. it really does refer to sleep. >> right. >> shut eye. not that kind of sleep. >> i think when we're both well rest ever rested we are more able to take on the world to deal with teenage issues that come up and toddler issues

because we run the gamut at our house. i do find that when i get into bed, my eyes tend to close quickly anyway. >> but it is good. >> everybody can meet the world really feeling good and, you know, you don't get the snarky things that come when you're a little too tired. >> irritable. >> it's hard, though. i've got six kids. >> i don't know how you do it. >> my husband is gone a lot. they sleep in my bed. >> six kids in your bed? >> the bottom three or four will come in and kick me in the head and i get peed on. >> wow! >> feeding your personal soul because so often we are so over tasked, multitasking and taking care of everybody else's needs. what do you do to kind of get back to yourself, hel heather? >> i thought of the world guilt before. that's my nature. >> aren't we all? >> we're not all. we actually talked about this earlier. you're really good about not feeling guilty about it. i've had to grow into that role. what i realized is that i've

become a more grown and seasoned woman as mother and wife, if i don't do things for myself to nurture my soul or naughty little pleasure of a tv show or plunging my hands into the garden with the kids and the dog, something i love, i can't flourish as a person and feel good and relaxed and happy and fulfilled in my soul and i'm not going to be able to take care -- like the flight attendant says, put the mask on yourself first, then the kids. we have to give ourselves permission to do that. >> we have much more to chew over when we come back after this. miss, this seat's available. at the tv station that i grew up watching. little did i know as much as i loved my career when my third baby was born and i looked at her, i had a life changing moment, an especiallyiveny a ie need to be home. i did continue to work part time so i could hopefully launch myself, eventually. and i'm ready now to come back to work. >> rachel, you said moms make the best hires, right? >> i think they absolutely do. it's a good thing to keep your fingers in the pie if you think that's something you want to do. everything has its trade-offs. i was pursuing a career in television and just really came to an epiphany where i thought i could live without having that amazing career. i didn't, for me personally think i could live with being 50 and having missed those moments. that's a personal choice and that's what's so great about the era we live in where staying home and choosing to work is a choice, but i think you can do a lot of things at once now, with

technology. >> true. >> working from home. it's not impossible. >> and a pediatrician, what you're doing every day is so important. like you said, you love it. you have no regrets. >> i never stepped back. i worked full time my whole life. i have three children. you know, i think that for me it was just who i am. i'm very true to who i am. i spend time with my kids. it's funny because it feels like people who say you're a stay at home mom or working mom, like the working mothers never see their children. >> not true. >> i said to my 20-year-old when he was younger, do you wish i had stayed home? he said why, you're around all the time. for my children they understand what i do is important for me. it does feed my soul, what i do for a living. i think it's important and i love it. one of the great things is if you have the choice -- many women do not have the choice. they must work. >> that's true. >> my mother had to work, my grandmother worked. i'm from a culture of women who worked. it doesn't seem awkward to me. if you step back and do nothing

>> that's right, amazon, all those other providers and most of those are available on these different types of devices but there's no subscription fee for the devices. you pay a subscription for netflix or -- >> for the content. >> for the content. >> boxes and boxes of photographs. what to do with them now in the digital age. how do we consolidate all that? >> you want to preserve these. >> sure. >> memories and stuff. >> it they're going to physically fade. >> they are going to physically fade. a great scanner, flatbed scanner like this epson here, great colors, great resolution. you also want to have something that's simple and easy for you to use. look for ones that have some restore coloration, software embedded in it to make sure the images -- >> from roy in detroit, 3,000 picture, most in albums, would like to put them on to a usb stick. is there a quick and easy scanner that will put it on to the usb? >> get it to the computer and

then get it to the usb, that's the fastest way. start with a great quality scanner, get it to your computer and move those files to the usb stick. >> what about all the stuff you've recorded on your phone? these videos. >> yes. >> a lot of folks have these great videos. but again a lot of it is all stuck on the phone. >> it is all stuck on the phone. i want to make sure i mention something, don't shoot vertical video. >> horizontal. >> yes, vertical video is a problem. i saw a lot of kids at my son's recital shooting video like this. years later they're going to want to play that on a tv. it's going to show up -- >> black bars. >> just like this on the tv, vertical so shoot it horizontal. >> from rachel, the next question -- gloria in dover, delaware. how do you get those videos from your phone to your computer? >> for the iphone, you connect your cable and you go right to

your computer. then you use i-photo. a lot of people think it's itunes but it's i-photo. you input the video into it. once you're in, you see on the screen, that box i have here, look for those images that have a video camera. these are photos. these are still photos. these are actually video. once you select that, you can import that to your computer. and then you'll have it backed up. >> import relatively quickly, a little bit longer than a photograph? >> yeah. it all depends on how long the video is itself, too. >> one more quick one for you, dan in minnesota wants to know do i really need anti-virus software for my mac? you get offers for these all the time. do you need it? >> you should always have some type of anti-virus protection. it never really happen but when it does, it's a big deal. >> apple itself just got hacked. >> yeah. so when it does, it's a big deal, but it never really happens. one i recommend is intego.

color. >> this whole grounds would be a canvas. >> yes. he's painting with flowers. >> actually smells, too. there's a bee in that one. the gardens aren't the only grand works at the getty. that's not a little pot. i literally thought, though, it was going to be really little. >> it's about as monumental as you can get. >> what flowers do you even put in there? and if size isn't your thing. this is beautiful. >> this is the painting that probably attracts more visitors than any other work in the collection. >> vincent van gogh's "irises." museums can be inspiring. from the getty it was time to go back in time to where -- [ speaking in a foreign language ] -- began. where are we right now?

>> el pueblo historical monument, the birthplace of the city of los angeles. the city began right here in 1781. >> i seem to make friends quickly. i love a guy that can dance. >> people tend to forget there's a history, a really deep history, and what's familiar here is you'll see the circular plaza in the center and if you travel to central america or mexico, every town, every pueblo, has a central plaza. los angeles has a central plaza. >> that's interesting, in the midwest where i'm from we have all squares. then, from the historic to the pre-historic. the tar pits are home to fossils from over 650 types of plants and animals, mostly from the last ice age. we have millions of fossils found right in the city. you look around, there's buildings, there's cars zooming by. >> oh, my gosh. >> yeah, we're standing right on top of an oil field.

>> right now we're sitting on top of a section of a fossil deposit. why is this area so rich with fossils? >> we're very lucky in all of los angeles basins is a giant oil field and this area is where the crude oil has been coming up to the surface for tens of thousands of years and it can only happen rarely, so it was enough to preserve these animals for tens of thousands of years. >> now it's time for a little less of this, as my dad says, and a little more of this. the world famous l.a. film harmonics. housed in the walt disney concert hall, a work of art in itself. from classical to rock, a really, really, really big rock. >> what is it called? i call it big rock. >> it's called levitated mass. >> the los angeles county museum of art's 340-ton megalithic
